Paul Gissens on the appointment of the new coach: “I want Marc Overmars for the rest of his career in Antwerp”

Paul Gissens responded for the first time in the Dutch newspaper NRC to the appointment of coach Marc Overmars and about the departure of some sponsors.

Paul Jessens remains convinced of his choice to appoint Marc Overmars as Antwerp’s new coach. “Mark is a sympathetic, right, friendly guy. He made mistakes, but humbly expressed remorse. Should he do it to the speaker? No, not the guy who makes noise. I want to keep Overmars in Antwerp for the rest of his career,” says Jessens.

When asked by dropped sporsors, he’s honest. “Two sponsors were already planning to leave the club before the appointment of Marc Overmars. The third company that has left now wants to return as sponsor,” explains the Antwerp president.

New sponsors have applied for Bosuil. For Paul Jessens, it is still surprising that the appointment of Marc Overmars caused so much backlash. This is one of many instances of infringing behaviour. You can’t just skip mistakes”, but ending the Overmars as the culprit is not feasible in the opinion of the Antwerp president.
