The Polish parliament on Friday passed a controversial bill to prevent companies outside the European economy from gaining a majority stake in Polish media.

The EEA has 27 member states of the European Union, including Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. The United States views the media law as an attempt by the Polish government to silence TVN24, a news channel owned by American media company Discovery.
In September, the Senate, which has a majority in the opposition, voted against the proposal. On Friday, however, the ruling Conservative, right-wing law and Justice PiS unexpectedly pushed the bill to the forefront, with 228 in favor and 219 against in the House of Commons. The bill is still awaiting the signing of Polish President Andrzej Duda.
America ‘very disappointed’
Pix Aliu of the US Embassy in Poland said: “The United States is very disappointed with the passage of the bill on the media in the Polish parliament today.” Believes that the law protects the Polish media landscape from such hostile forces.
TVN24 is a current news channel that is considered critical of the country’s ruling conservatives. Since 2017, the news channel has been owned by Discovery, a US multinational corporation that manages television channels such as the Discovery Channel and DLC.
