Kyiv – Ukraine celebrated its annual Independence Day on Saturday. The main absentee was the president of neighboring Russia. According to Russian expert Tgerd Omslag, the Russian president’s absence from the celebrations is another insult to Ukrainians by the Russian president.
Ukraine’s Independence Day was celebrated with a solemn ceremony in the capital, Kyiv. The ceremony was attended by many prominent figures, including Polish President Duda and Lithuanian Prime Minister Simonyte. It was notable that Russian President Putin did not attend.
Russian expert Tgerd Omslag speaks of a very inappropriate gesture by Putin. “On Independence Day, Ukraine celebrated the anniversary of the country’s independence from Russia 33 years ago. The fact that Putin was not present at the ceremony can be considered a great insult to Ukraine,” Omslag said.
In Ukraine, it was celebrated that the country had been a sovereign state for 33 years.
According to Omslag, it is not entirely clear why Putin did not attend the Independence Day celebrations in Ukraine: “The Kremlin has not yet issued a statement. It is known that relations between the two neighboring countries have been tense for some time. Perhaps Putin wanted to send a signal, but this is just speculation.”
