IJmuiden – After a number of very hot and crowded days, the rescuers of the IJmuider Rescue Brigade were given more space last week to carry out maintenance and practice emergency services.
On Monday 12 and Tuesday 13 August, the beach team was busy providing first aid (36 times) and assisting missing persons (6 times). On days like these, there is a risk of dehydration and heat exhaustion. When people feel unwell due to the heat, it is important to provide cooling. The rescue brigade provides support in this regard. It was cooler last week, which also reduced the crowds. Last Wednesday evening, action had to be taken towards a person who became unwell in Zuidpier.
Rescue training
On Sunday 18th August, there was a large team of young volunteers, providing a lot of training in the context of lifeguard training. These young volunteers follow the lifeguard course which is offered on Wednesday evenings. During this course, members are trained to become lifeguards by practicing various case studies. Members who are training for specialization, such as lifeguard driver, lifeguard leader and senior lifeguard, are trained on this evening.
During the course, different skills are trained such as driving, communicating with each other and with other emergency services and providing first aid in (life-threatening) situations. Some examples of scenarios are relieving convulsions, expanding in case of loss of (water), rescuing drowning people and transporting the victim to the ambulance service.
