You may know him as the drummer for Barno Koevoet & The Duijmschpijkers, but Mathias Grymonprez takes a slightly different approach to his solo project. It's still loud anyway, but the level of insanity goes up dramatically, as the man already proved during Leffinge's vocal track preliminaries. We then summarized his journey as “a bumper car ride: you never know where you'll end up and why you do it, but you still get behind the wheel over and over again”; A streak that was easily continued on their debut EP Oink Oink. Even though it was published less than a month ago, the company is already back with the craziest “I'll do it anyway” line.
“I can't turn the recorder on, but I turn it on anyway.” That's all you need to understand what we meant by our bumper car quote. For less than three minutes, Ricky Pickstock blasts your ear canals from all sides, after which bruises and bumps are no exception. A touch of electronics, new wave guitar, but especially an intense wall of noise in the choruses are the essential ingredients for a crazy song that sounds so ridiculous it gets good. The combination of that sexy West Flemish accent and the intense screaming also makes the phrase “I'm doing it anyway” feel very fresh and could become one of the hype of the year.
On Saturday 3 February, Ricky Pickstock will be at the Dancing Bear at Barbaros in Ghent.
