Road cushions, posts and concrete blocks should make the road between Oud-Turnhout and Ravels safer.

Several serious accidents have occurred in recent years on Heieinde and Leeuwerkstraat in Oud-Turnhout, the road that connects Oud-Turnhout and Ravels. One of them even resulted in fatalities. People often drive too fast on the street. There is a speed limit of 50 km/h. But many motorists do not adhere to this.

Speed Limit

That’s why the municipality has taken speed limiting measures. Road cushions have been placed in 6 places on the street. In addition, there are posts so that it is not possible to swerve to the left. And to prevent motorists from swerving to the right, onto the soft shoulder, concrete blocks have been placed along this side. All these interventions combined mean that traffic has to slow down in order to get past the obstacles.

This is a test setup for the concrete blocks along the side. The municipality will assess the situation and consider how to protect the soft edge in the long term.

Mixed reactions

There are mixed reactions in the neighborhood to the newly erected barriers. Most residents are happy that people are driving slower on the street. But in homes near the barriers, residents complain that people are constantly slowing down and speeding up right outside their front doors.
