At the European Championship, Roberto Martinez will hope to start better for Portugal than the Red Devils. In the period leading up to the tournament, the former national coach highlighted the relationship between his successor, Domenico Tedesco, and Thibaut Courtois, who shone in his absence from Germany.
Quinn Casteels is not to blame, but after a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Slovakia, the conversation around the Real Madrid goalkeeper is threatening to become subjective again. As you know, Courtois decided to withdraw from the European Championship after the captaincy debate led to a reality TV series.
Tensions in the past
But it’s probably no coincidence, Martinez revealed. In the podcast SHOUTcast Journalist Janko Beckman tells how he spoke to a Spanish journalist working on a documentary about Courtois. In the series, which will be broadcast from September, one of the episodes also revolves around the Red Devils and his relationship with Tedesco.
Martinez also appeared in it. The 50-year-old Spaniard will explain how there have been tensions in the past over who is allowed to wear the captain’s armband for the national team. During his tenure, from mid-2016 until after the disappointing World Cup in Qatar in 2022, that honor was reserved for Eden Hazard.
Tedesco vs. Martinez
After his retirement, Tedesco decided to appoint Kevin De Bruyne as captain, with Romelu Lukaku and Courtois as vice-captains. An arrangement that appears to have not satisfied everyone and may have caused frustrations to surface once again, something that has been happening for some time but Martinez has managed to handle better.
Dealing with stars and their egos remains the specialty of the former national coach, who now also enjoys an excellent relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo. Unlike Tedesco, Martinez is not even shy about white lies to protect his dressing room from the outside world. This is something Courtois particularly appreciates.
