The operation saw 25 home searches across the country. Gang members were arrested. The United States was notified of the operation against these cybercriminals because Washington specifically requested action against REvil from the Russian government.

US President Joe Biden also urged his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin last summer to take more action against criminal hacker groups operating in Russia. This was after a massive cyber attack in July that affected nearly 1,500 companies in several countries.

Ransomware forces victims to pay large ransoms. For example, REvil extorted about $11 million (€9.6 million) in 2021 American Meat Processing Company.

Earlier that year, a group of oil pipelines in the United States was bombed. It is not known if and how much the ransom paid by Colonial Pipeline came out of the problem. The cyber attack forced the temporary shutdown of a major oil pipeline, causing fuel shortages at gas stations and high fuel prices. Russian hackers are also suspected of doing this, operating under the name DarkSide.
