Today, the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S22, and Galaxy S23 are ready for the January update. The update brings several improvements to Android security, but it doesn't fix a single bug.
Galaxy S21, S22, and S23 updated in January 2024
Yesterday, Samsung and Google – or one of them – resolved an issue that had been affecting the Galaxy S22 and S23 models for some time. Now that Google Play system updates are finally rolling in again, we can confidently look forward to more security updates. Starting with the January update.
Because it starts today on Samsung's Galaxy S21, S22, and S23 series devices. Firmware version G99*BXXS9FWL9 is rolling out to the first S21 models, while firmware S90*BXXS7DWL3 is available on the first S22 devices. On the S23, S91*BXXS3BWL3 firmware installs up to 75 Android security improvements. The package size is just over 250MB on the S22, and just under 400MB on the Galaxy S23.

As far as we know, today's update will not fix the bug that disables burn-in protection in the status bar. This error appeared on all Samsung phones after upgrading to Android 14 and One UI 6. Samsung promised to fix it soon – but with the January update, that has not happened yet.
Availability
The January update is now available on Unbranded Galaxy S23, S23+, and Galaxy S23 Ultra in the Netherlands, Belgium, and other European countries. It's also now available on the first Galaxy S21 and S21 devices.
As always, you can wait for your phone to report that the update is ready. Or you can check yourself if you can download it via Settings -> Software Update -> Download and Install.
