Samsung has acquired British artificial intelligence startup Oxford Semantic for an undisclosed sum. Oxford Semantic specializes in Knowledge graphsa technology that can be used for more advanced AI applications.
Samsung and Oxford Semantic signed an agreement on Thursday. Samsung writes in a press releaseThe tech giant says the two have been working together on various projects since 2018. The company wants to better customize AI apps on its phones, for example. According to the South Korean tech giant, Oxford Semantics’ technologies are also being used more widely, for example in TVs and home appliances.
The two companies did not disclose financial details of the acquisition. The deal still needs to be approved by competition regulators. The companies did not say when they expect the acquisition to close.
Oxford Semantic was founded in 2017 by three professors from the University of Oxford. The company operates what is called Knowledge graphsIt is a database technology that stores data as a kind of network of entities and relationships between those entities. In this way, the system tries to retrieve information and recommendations more quickly and understand what someone means by a specific question.
