Tour in the Alps
12:00 Aegina – 15:27 Courtenig an der Weinstrasse
Tobias Voss achieved his first win as an Ineos Grenadiers employee. In the first stage of the Alpine Tour, the Norwegian won the race against three other leaders.
For many riders, the Tour of the Alps is a stepping stone to the Tour of Italy, and it began with a short 133-kilometre stage in South Tyrol.
There were three climbs along the way, but the decision finally came down the final slope. Romain Bardet smashed the peloton into several pieces with a lightning-fast landing.
The Frenchman was joined from DSM-Firmenich PostNL by Geraint Thomas and Esteban Chavez, among others. It wasn't long until Wout Poels, Ben O'Connor and Tobias Foss were able to connect as well.
An elite group of 11 contestants went in search of victory on the stage. In the background, Movistar tried to move the needle, but they could no longer catch up with the leading group.
After several weak attempts by Vos, Chávez was able to launch a split attack. Only Vos, Chavis and Chris Harper weren't surprised and jumped along.
In the sprint race, Vos (ex-Jumbo-Visma) was able to score his first win for the Ineos Grenadier team, ahead of Harper and Chaves. The former world champion will start the time trial tomorrow as leader of the second stage ahead of Stans.
