Sigrid Kaag becomes Minister of Finance in the new Dutch government. The leader of the D66 group said in a statement that this position is “crucial” in implementing the parties’ “ambitious plans” for the coming years.
Sigrid Kaag becomes the first female finance minister and first in the D66. Earlier this week, it was announced that her party had taken the ministerial position on finance. It has been the norm for years for the second largest party in the ruling coalition to provide the treasury guard. But sitting minister Wopke Hoekstra of the CDA also wanted to continue.
Kaag will also become Deputy Prime Minister, and sees himself as having an important responsibility in this position. “I am thinking in particular about fighting polarization in politics and society.” Like all Target Ministers, Kaag will meet with ex-coordinator Mark Rutte next week. If all goes according to plan The new Dutch government will be sworn in on January 10th..
In the previous government, Kaag served as Minister of Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation and later as Minister of Foreign Affairs. She resigned after the chaos caused by the evacuation from Afghanistan after the Taliban seized power there.
