Slovakia’s new populist prime minister promised voters not to send money to Ukraine outside

The winner of the election in Slovakia, Robert Fico, was inaugurated as prime minister for the fourth time. The populist leader of the Smer-SSD ran a Eurosceptic campaign and promised not to send any more money to neighboring Ukraine.

The Smer-SSD forms a coalition with the pro-Russian SNS and the far-right and left-wing party HLAS. Analysts expect the latter party to have a moderating influence on Fico’s policy. HLAS wants to continue the foreign policy of the previous government, which ruled Slovakia in a pro-European manner and was an important ally of Ukraine.

Sanctions against Russia

The rest of the EU will wait with bated breath for Slovakia’s next course of action. For example, Fico criticizes the sanctions imposed on Russia, which are jointly imposed by the European Union. A member of the new coalition said on Tuesday that he expected Fico to appear immediately in Brussels during the European summit on Thursday.

Fico previously served as Prime Minister of Slovakia between 2006 and 2010 and between 2012 and 2018. Then he often took a practical stance.
