After coffee with olive oil, the American coffee chain Starbucks once again introduces a new and amazing coffee flavour: pork. In the Chinese branches of the chain you can now order a delicious latte, specially released to celebrate the Chinese New Year.
Chinese coffee drinkers can order coffee, espresso with frothed milk, pork sauce and a piece of pork brisket for garnish, at one of the American coffee chain's 785 branches in the country. Starbucks itself describes the taste as “interesting.”
The attractive drink was announced on Chinese social media network Weibo in the run-up to Chinese New Year on February 10. “Eating meat means prosperity in the coming year. The drink brings the traditional customs of celebrating the New Year in coffee,” Starbucks wrote in the ad.
There are mixed feelings about the drink on social media. Although many users are curious about the new flavour, there are also many Chinese people wondering why they would pay 68 yuan, or approximately 9 euros, for a pork-flavored coffee instead of just eating pork. However, according to local media, the coffee has already been sold out in many places, such as Wuhan.
The chance of Pork Coffee being launched in other countries is rather slim.
