Steenwijkerland sets a policy for art in public spaces. Advisor Trigen Jungmann: ‘A rich and diverse offering when it comes to art in public spaces

The municipality of Steinwickerland has recently created frameworks for the way existing and new art is treated in public spaces. An extensive inventory of the current art display will be started in 2024. It will then also become clear what new art contributes to the diverse offer now available in the municipality.

Councilor Triggen Jungmann: “Steenwijkerland has a really rich and diverse offer when it comes to art in public spaces. We are keen on this, because it is attractive to both our residents and visitors. At the same time, we want to offer a space for entrepreneurs who have a plan for new artworks. To arrange this To properly and provide clarity around the possibilities, we have established these frameworks in which we have also better assigned the role of the Visual Arts Committee.

There has been no such clarity yet. This led, among other things, to the fact that the Visual Arts Commission was only asked for advice when the initiator’s plans were already at an advanced stage. “It’s not helpful, because it leads to disappointment if you have to make last-minute adjustments,” the councilman says. The committee is now involved early and thinking from the beginning.

The goal is to connect new art in public space to existing works or activities. “Think of a sculpture trail or new spatial developments where art would be a nice addition. In this way, you do justice to the artwork itself and at the same time create unity.
