Helmsman An Vannieuwenhuyse and Brakewoman Sara Aerts on Friday take part in the bobsleigh competition at the Beijing Winter Olympics. Then the first two phases were scheduled, and three and four were scheduled to run the next day.
The Belgian Bullets trained with their ruby sleds at Yanqing National Ski Center on Wednesday, and it didn’t go as planned. In the day’s first practice round, they scored the eighth chrono, but at the start of the second half, Aertes slipped, leaving Vanuvenheis alone. “Suddenly it felt so heavy for me when pressed,” Vannieuwenhuyse laughed. “But the race itself was good, which is surprising. Because if there is no one behind you will have less stability. This incident is the first in my 11-year career. I hope this does not happen Friday and Saturday.”
The duo thought about skipping the last practice. But they abandoned this idea. “I don’t want to start the Olympic campaign after this start,” said Aertes. On Thursday, the Bullets will complete one or two training sessions. At the 2018 Games in Pyeongchang, An Vannieuwenhuyse sent her two-man bob to 12th, then still with Sophie Vercruisen. 38-year-old Sarah Aerts will finish her last bobsleigh race in Beijing anyway. In Pyeongchang, the former all-around athlete finished 11th with Elvge Willemsen.
Vannieuwenhuyse and Aerts aim for the top ten, and ideally an Olympic diploma (top eight). “We haven’t had the best season. But since the track is very technical and we have a good feeling while training, our ambition is realistic,” concluded Vannieuwenhuyse, who hopes to give the Belgian Bullets project a new impetus with a good result.
