Ten Americans released in Venezuela in exchange for becoming allies of President Maduro | outside

US President Joe Biden announced on Wednesday the release of ten Americans detained in Venezuela. According to sources in Washington, Biden will release an ally of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in return.

Joe Biden added that in addition to releasing the ten Americans, Caracas also extradited fugitive Leonard Francis to the United States. Francis is involved in a major corruption scandal in the US Navy.

The Maduro ally who will be released under the agreement is Colombian businessman Alex Saab. In 2020, he was imprisoned in the United States on charges of embezzling funds. Saab is said to have embezzled about $350 million in cooperation with close allies of Maduro, while the money was intended for food aid in Venezuela.
