The bodies of four U.S. Marines killed in a plane crash in Norway have been found and flown to a nearby city, the Norwegian Ministry of Defense said. The aircraft participated in NATO exercises.
“Four crew members have been rescued from the scene by a Sea King rescue helicopter from Norwegian Force 330. The bodies will remain in Bodo (north) until they are flown to the United States,” the Armed Forces said.
The Marine Osprey plane with four Americans went missing from radar in bad weather on Friday. Bad weather made recovery difficult. According to the first data, the plane collided with a mountain. Public broadcaster NRK said the black box had been discovered.
The aircraft was involved in training as part of a cold response exercise involving 200 aircraft and fifty ships. These maneuvers, which will last until April 1, will test Norway’s ability to gain external reinforcements under Article 5 of the NATO Charter if a third country invades. Section 5 compels NATO countries to come to the aid if the member state is attacked by a third country.
