Powerful psychopathic superheroes also suffer from a midlife crisis.
At the end of the third season of Boys As a viewer, I was a bit tired of Homelander. Or at least: I’m tired of the way the show’s creators treated Homelander (Anthony Starr, Banshee) I dealt with him. For a moment it looked like the powerful psychopathic superhero would be taken down after all. With the help of soldier boy (Jensen Ackles, supernatural) had Billy Butcher (Karl Urban, Star Trek, the Lord of the Rings), who for three seasons wanted nothing more than to destroy Homelander once and for all, as his goal was within reach. Until Butcher changes his mind at the last minute, because Soldier Boy was rude to Ryan, Homelander’s son and Butcher’s deceased ex-husband.
Understandable: Homelander, brilliantly played by Starr (a role for which he was never nominated for an Emmy), is the biggest draw of this action-packed, ultra-violent comedy. You only slaughter such a cash cow when it is completely emptied (the next season, which will also be the last season, has already been ordered). However, with these narrative leaps and leaps, you begin to wonder if there’s anyone out there who can beat Homelander.

But, as showrunner Eric Kripke (supernatural) In Season 4, the series still has its best up its sleeve. At first glance, it seems we are back to square one: with an unapproachable citizen, like the superpowered Donald Trump, able to go about his business unimpeded. But the reality is a little different. Homelander is having a major midlife crisis. He increasingly finds gray pubic hair, which he keeps (of course) in a jar. He discovers that fatherhood is not as easy as he thought. It is noted that, after the voluntary resignation of super colleague Starlight (Erin Moriarty) and the forced departure of CEO (Giancarlo Esposito), Too bad), leading a super team that only includes sycophants and yes-men isn’t everything.

‘I save people, and they cheer me on. I kill people, and they cheer loudly, too. What difference does it make?’ But Sister Sage (Susan Hayward, Orange is the new black), the smartest woman – sorry, human – in the world, has a solution: “Every democracy fails because people are stupid.” They just need a push.” And who will people look to when the world is in ruins? That’s right: Homeland! But are more feathers in his ass the answer? Who knows: Homelander’s greatest enemy may be himself.
The Boys S04 weekly on Amazon Prime Video from Thursday, June 13, 2024, starting with the first three episodes
