Because of covid measures, the audience in Dendermonde had to stay at home, but at home in front of the tube, this audience was served a delicious World Cup cross. The slightly modified course at Dendermonde promised a tough race.
Denis Betsima was the first to shake the tree on the opening stage. Favorite Lucinda Brand, last year’s winner at Dendermonde, completely missed her start and had to start.
After two rounds, the world champion put things in order and joined the lead. The moment you throw the cards on the table immediately. The brand took a few seconds to hit and no one would see it again.
In the background, the powerful Clara Hunsinger is joined by Betsema and Pieterse. The American meticulously wrapped the Dutch and managed to secure a nice second place in the mud of Dendermonde.
Sanne Cant also showed promising performance. With the Belgian championship approaching, it seems that the Belgian champion is gradually advancing towards her highs. Today she placed seventh, ahead of top riders like Fez and Alvarado.
But it all happened in the shadow of Lucinda Brand. With her second straight win at Dendermonde and her fifth World Cup win of the season, she once again consolidated her lead in the standings.
“It wasn’t a quiet start for me,” Brand looks back at her difficult opening leg after arriving. “They went really fast and I just needed some time to find my good streaks.”
“In the end, Honsinger progressed well, but I watched my progress closely and still had something in the tank if I needed it. I played it safe.”
