Maple City Councilor Janet Buss is not interested in additional money for culture. He added, “I will abide by the coalition agreement and will work with the same amount of money.”
It is precisely the coalition party Sterk-Meppel and his D66 party that may want to spend additional money. The reason is a new cultural plan from the local council member. It contains the necessary changes, but there is no room for additional expenses. Council member Adrian Postma (D66) asks: “Change generally costs money. Does this mean the culture at Maple stops?”
Sterk Maple, among others, has come up with a proposal so that the municipal council can disburse the funds if necessary. Boss says he’s surprised by these reactions. “We have to stay within budget,” she repeats. Elizabeth Baknis, the leader of fellow coalition party Stirke Maple, reacts strongly. “Should we? We decide, right?”
She adds that it is not intended to spend additional money on culture right away. “If it turns out not to be necessary, not a penny will be added.”
One of the biggest cultural changes may be the Stedelijk Meppel Museum. We’ve been looking for somewhere else for years. Our attention now turns to the De Hes Warehouse, a regional monument that has stood empty for years and is currently being converted into apartments with commercial space underneath.
Interim president Micky Mulders stresses that this is just a wish, but other locations are also being considered. “We’ve been doing this for years. We’re keeping our eyes open.”
