San GilNearly ten days after baker Luc De Weerdt of Sint-Gillis sold his 2,000 epiphany cake, the first gold coin winner appeared. On Saturday afternoon, Nicholas Klerbois, 41, came to the bakery in Waterloosesteenweg with the coin. It is richer by 480 euros. “The money I’m going to spend on a family weekend at Disneyland,” laughs the winner.

On January 6, standing in long lines, customers of De Weerdt Bakery in Sint-Gillis who were hoping to find one of two gold coins in their Epiphany cake. In the end, two thousand cakes came out that day. However, it was until Saturday – nearly ten days later – before the winner appeared at the bakery. “A man came in suddenly with a gold coin,” says convinced baker Luc de Werdt (59). “However, he was shocked when I told him he had received €480. He thought the coin was worth €200 ‘only’, just like the past two years.”
