German brands in particular are good at making model names a little complicated. For example, adding “e-tron” can mean it’s a PHEV, but it’s also an electric car. But it can also be the name of the model. To make things tougher, Audi is now changing its naming strategy. The Audi A4 as we know it is now called the Audi A5. And for the first time, there will be an Audi A5 station wagon.
The new strategy is simple. Audi models with an odd number in their name will have a combustion engine, while those with an even number in their name will be electric. For clarity, Audi’s electric cars will also be called “e-tron.” That’s actually the same extension Audi used for its plug-in hybrids, but now it’s called “TFSI e.”
The new Audi A5 will have a gasoline engine, while the A4 will be electric.
The A4 name won’t die: It will go all-electric. Just like the Audi A6, that is. Audi’s new electric cars will be on the so-called Premium Platform Electric (PPE). The new combustion cars are on the Premium Combustion Platform (PPC). The new Audi A5 is the first car to feature this platform, but the new Q5 will also be on this architecture.
Enough with the names in Audi, let’s talk about the new A5. We have to say that in terms of nose design it is closer to the current A5 than the A4. The rear end is very “A4”. The new Audi A5 should be slightly larger than the A4 it replaces. The new taillights can communicate with other cars through light animations, for example to warn of a dangerous situation.
The display on the dashboard extends from the center to behind the steering wheel, and is often also called the “Mercedes display”. You can optionally order an additional display for the front passenger. Then Princess of passengers (m/f) Select music without interrupting home screen navigation, for example.
New Audi A5 Engines
In Germany, you can order the Audi A5 with diesel engines, but in the Netherlands the brand has vowed to be cheap. Here you can choose between a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 150 or 204 hp. You can order all-wheel drive from the latter. More engines will be added to the range later, Audi promises. We also expect a new Audi RS 5.
Also new Audi S5
If you want things a little faster, you can opt for the new Audi S5. It produces 367 horsepower from a 3.0-liter V6 gasoline engine. The faster version always gets all-wheel drive and a small electric motor that adds 24 horsepower. You can order the new Audi S5 as a sedan and as a station wagon. Pricing for the new Audi A5 and S5 is not yet known.
