Marks stated that Swift had been secretly trying to identify herself as bisexual or lesbian since the beginning of her career. “By itself, a single piece of evidence may be meaningless or coincidental, but together they suggest to gay people that she is one of them.” Swift has embraced the LGBTQ+ community in the past, calling her concerts a “safe space” for LGBTQ+ people. Swift has also spoken out in the past against anti-gay bills in the US. “Until recently, I didn’t realize that I could stand up for a community that I wasn’t part of,” the singer said in an interview with Vogue magazine.

A person in Swift's entourage responded anonymously to a CNN op-ed: “This article should not be written about Shawn Mendes or any other male artist whose sexual orientation is questioned by fans.
