The Olympic team enters the field after the racist comments of Germany

The German Olympic team withdrew from the field during a training match against Honduras in Wagah, Japan. The committee decided to stop the exhibition game due to racist comments against defender Jordan Torunarica. The German Football Association posted the announcement on Twitter.

“If one of our athletes is racially abused, it is not our intention to continue playing,” said Stephen Kundz, national coach of the German Olympic team. Five minutes before the final signal, the team exited the football field 1-1.

The racist comments did not come from the stand as the match took place behind closed doors. It is not yet clear who is responsible for the comments about the 23-year-old Toronarica, but according to the German Football Association, they were made by one of the opponents.

During the Olympics in Tokyo, both Germany and Honduras play in different teams. The German team will face Brazil in the group stage next Thursday. Honduras will play its first match in Group B against Romania on the same day. Germany will then play Ivory Coast and Saudi Arabia. At the group stage Honduras will still face South Korea and New Zealand. Numbers one and two of the four teams in total will advance to the quarterfinals. The Netherlands failed to qualify for the Olympics.

The Germans are making a tough preparation for the games. After several cancellations, the German team was able to go to Japan with 15 field players and three goalkeepers, while a team of 22 players was allowed.
