On July 26, one year before the Olympics began, Gresnote looked into his crystal ball.
The statistics agency bases the hypothetical medal table on all available data from major competitions, such as past Olympic Games, World Cups and World Cups.
The Belgian weather forecast looked particularly favorable this summer. With 20th place and 13 medals, a record harvest was predicted for our country.
Gold (4) was presented virtually to Navi Thiam, Remco Evenpoel (time trial), Lotte Kubicki (road trial) and Lotte Kubicki and Shari Bossuet (team race).
The recent gold medal was already in serious doubt due to the doping issue surrounding Bossuet and those doubts have not been dispelled.
Silver (5) could finish in the basket of the Belgian Tornadoes, Nina Druel, the Red Lions, Matthias Casse and Emma Plasschaert.
Bronze (4) went to Woot van Aart (road race), eventing and jumping and Sarah Shari in taekwondo.
From 4 gold, 5 silver, and 4 bronze at the end of July, it becomes 3 gold, 4 silver, and 3 bronze at the beginning of November.
Consequently, the potential harvest was reduced from 13 medals to 10 medals, and Belgium fell on the ladder from 20th to 27th place.
Who are the athletes who have lost confidence in medaling?
Nina Deruel is out of action and still has to qualify for Paris, which will not be easy given the weight of the injury and the qualification process. It has disappeared from the list.
There is also no trace of the sailors Emma Plasschaert and the Belgian Tornado. The relay team seemed to be guaranteed a great performance, but this time in Budapest they didn’t even make it through the heats.
There are transitions among some other Belgian actors. Nafie Thiam falls to bronze and the Belgian jumping team rises to gold.
The eventing team is also on the rise, with Lotte Kubicki and Shari Bossuyt slipping back to the silver medal (although their ticket remains highly uncertain).
