Jan Willem van Schep has been kicked out of the Tour of Balois Belgium by the UCI. The Dutchman received today from the competition jury Permission to use a special steering wheel To start. But that decision has now been reversed.
“The exclusion is based on the ABB handlebar Jan-Willem used during the ride which, according to a UCI statement, would not be allowed. We cannot put this down,” the team wrote in a statement.
“Since the launch of the ABB handlebar, we have been discussing this with the UCI. At no time has the UCI informed us that the wheel will not be allowed. Also, the UCI has seen no need to accept the offer of the ABB handlebar developer to further investigate the admissibility of this offer.”
“The morning before the start of stage three, we discussed our intentions to ride the wheel with the UCI commissioner on site. Here we got the green light to start at the wheel. The UCI had no reservations about it. Pete believes the disqualification is unjustified and that Jan Willem van Schep suffers a lot.”
The 26-year-old Van Scape was once again part of today’s early journey. Along the way, he earned enough points to take the lead in the Flandrien Super 8 Strijdlust rating. But he can forget about this arrangement now. It is not yet known whether his team will appeal the jury’s decision.
