5 August 2021 The women of the United States came out with a bronze medal at the Olympics in Tokyo. In the consolation final, the five-time Olympic champion proved too strong for Australia 4-3. Experienced Megan Robino and Carly Lloyd took their team by the hand.
In advance, the United States topped the overall victory. The world champion has ruled world women’s football for many years. Four of the six Olympics went to the United States. But in Japan, the United States was already vulnerable in the group stage.
In the opening match, the United States suffered a rare defeat against Sweden (3-0) and a goalless draw against Australia. The quarterfinals against Orange escaped after a penalty shootout. In the semifinals, the screen fell: Canada was very strong at 0-1.
So the match for the bronze against Australia continued on Thursday. In contrast to the goalless draw in the group stage, the targets fell like ripe apples from a tree. Megan Robino scored with a good goal. The attacker hit from a turning point. Australia’s Sam Kerr then equalized. In the ensuing period, the United States again took a 4-1 lead via Robinho and Lloyd. Despite the goals of Caitlin Ford and Emily Gailnick, Australia were unable to repair the damage and the United States returned home with a bronze medal.
