Interim coach Hedwigs Maduro did not succeed in surprising Brighton, led by Roberto De Zerbe, at home. Ajax’s battle plan soon became clear: bombard Brighton with quick counterattacks from a low block.
However, there were no counter-attacks for Amsterdam in the first half. Brighton immediately had possession of the ball and tried to force their way through the Ajax defence.
His old acquaintance Kaoru Mitoma was the most active man on the home team. Ajax goalkeeper Ramage was able to block the Japanese shot shortly before the end of the first half, but the rebound scored for Brighton. Joao Pedro followed up well and scored the deserved 1-0 goal.
Ajax then came out of the dressing room with good intentions and launched a number of powerful attacks. But as the rules of football state, the restive Amsterdam residents were still dealt a blow.
Adingra sent the ball to Ansu Fati with a clever touch, who in turn put the ball beautifully between his defender’s legs.
2-0 to a motivated but weak Ajax.
The Amsterdam team almost brought tension back to the match through Berghus, but his attempt hit the post.
The home team had no further problems and played football in the history books: Brighton recorded their first European win in the club’s history.
In the standings, Brighton jumped over Ajax to second place equally. Ajax ranks last with 2 out of 9 and is preparing to take the lead in the competition against leaders PSV Eindhoven.
