You are working on a long document in Word or Excel and of course you want to help the reader not get lost. Using the header and/or footer, you can automatically number pages, indicate the relevant chapter and much more.
In Microsoft Word and Excel, we call the information in the top margin of the page the header and the information in the bottom margin the footer. In these margins you can include information that should appear on each page or on specific pages. Consider creation date, word count, tagline, project name, chapter title, or page number. Remember, what works for the header will always work for the footer. We will first look at the capabilities of Word, then the capabilities of Excel.

Enter in two ways
There are two ways to insert a header. The first way is to double click on the top of the page. Then a dotted line will appear with the label head. In this margin you can write content or add a logo. For the footer, double-click at the bottom of the page. To return to the normal contents of the document, double-click anywhere else on the page. You can also in the tab Insert the button head or Footer to use. If you click on it, a number of options will appear that you can modify further. In the footer, examples are below the line instead of above it.
Logo or graphic element
Tab Header and footer, which allows you to edit these elements, will only be visible after you activate the header or footer. In this example, for example, we need a little more space at the top to place the logo. You can arrange it in boxes Head from above or Footer from belowWhere you specify the distance. To place a logo, click this tab picture And select the image file on the hard disk. Of course, you can resize that image by selecting the imported image and dragging one of the handles around it. With the button Pictures online You can access the Internet's photo library via Bing. To close the header and footer, you can click the red cross button located on the right side of the tab. You will then automatically return to the page content.
The first page is different
Anything you add to the header or footer will automatically appear on all other pages. If you want the first page to not have a header/footer or a different header/footer than the rest of the page, you can resolve this issue in the Header and footer. In the department Options Place a check mark next to it The first page is different. This means that things you put in the header/footer of the first page will not appear on other pages. Even if you set a header or footer other than the first page, it will not affect the first page.
Page numbers
In the tab Header and footer You will find the button with the meaningful name page number. This takes you to the drop-down menu where you decide whether page numbers or not top of the page or At the bottom of the page He must come. By the way, the same dropdown menu is also present in the tab Insert. You'll find the task at the bottom of the drop-down menu Format page numbers. This is a bit confusing, but what Microsoft means is that you can also use letters or Roman numerals instead of numbers. This window has an option to display the chapter number first, followed by the page number. At the bottom you have the option to start numbering from a specific page. When finished, click the cross again Close the header and footer To see how Word applies these settings to the entire document. To adjust the font, font size, and page number style, select a number. The familiar pop-up formatting bar will then appear.
date and time
The position of the cursor in the header or footer determines where the date (and/or time) is inserted. Use in tab Header and footer the button date and timeOr go to the tab Insert In this category text To the same position. They both open the window date and time Which lists the different ways to display this data. If necessary, activate the check box Update automatically If you want the current date and time to appear when you open or print the document and not the original time you insert the date field. Document properties and fields
Sometimes you can also read document properties in the footer or header, such as the file name, path to your hard drive, or the number of words or characters used. This data is generated automatically, but you must first add a field. Let's say you want to show the number of words used in the header. Use this in tab Header and footer the button Quick parts. In the net area Choose you Categories Option Document data. This will show only the fields that apply to this category. bee Field names Select the option The number of words). In the description below, you can read: “The number of words in the document.” He also stands in the same place NumChars The number of letters and number of pages Regarding the number of pages. tap on Yes For confirmation. It's too much to discuss all the options here, but with some logical thinking you'll find what you're looking for here.
Section breaks
If your document consists of several parts and you want to use unique headers and footers for each part, you will need to create section breaks there first. Place the mouse cursor where you want to start a new section. Go to tab Planning And specify Comma marks/section breaks/next page. If you divide your document into different sections, you can set a separate page layout for the pages of that section. On the header and footer label, you can see which section it is for.
Edit or delete
You'll often want to add or modify something to the header or footer during the course of a project. Double-click the header or footer to activate it so you can change the content. You can also go to the tab Insert Go and drop down menu head or Footer Open so you can access the K commandVisual text editing or Edit footer Come. In Excel: three boxes
Header and footer sections work a little differently in Excel than they do in Word. The options are a little more limited than in Word. But the main difference is that you cannot see this data while working on the spreadsheet. This makes sense, because spreadsheets often consist of many cells in which you eventually complete the task Print limit Indicates the columns and rows you want on the paper. As long as you don't specify what information will be placed on paper and what the page layout will be, Excel will have no idea where the headers and footers should be placed. Fortunately, this does not mean that you should blindly enter the header and footer.
Go to tab Insert And click on the button Header and footer. So that's one button for both. At the top of the worksheet you will now see a box divided into three squares. You can put different information in each box. For example, enter your name in the first box, the project name in the second box, and the date in the third box. At the top of this tab there are two toggle buttons: To the head And To the footer. For example, if you want to add a page number in the footer, use the second button.
Dynamic field codes
You can of course type the text yourself in the three boxes that Excel offers, but it is more useful to use the ready-made field codes you have available in the Header and footer. Using such symbols makes headers and footers dynamic. This means that the content adapts when you make changes to the worksheet. Let's say you want to see the page number in the footer, as well as the total number of pages that make up the worksheet. So the result should be something like “1 of 12”. Place the mouse pointer in the box where you want to merge this data and then click the button page number. Excel then places the field code itself &[Pagina]. Then you write a space Followed by the word 'by' And another space. Then click on the button in the ribbon number of pages Which makes Excel field code &[Pagina’s] or not. Mix &[Pagina] by &[Pagina’s] It will be converted, for example, to 1 of 12, 2 of 12, and so on.
By the way, there are two features you should be aware of if you want to manually type data in the header and footer boxes. To start a new line in such a box, you must press Enters To press. And if you do &In the header or footer, you must type this code twice. So, if you want to see “Income and Expenses,” you should type “Income and Expenses.”
Date, time and photo
In addition to the page number and total number of pages, the tab contains other buttons that produce field codes, e.g Current date, Nowadays And file name. If you click the button file name used, the path to the document on the hard disk will appear there. the button picture You use it logically to insert an image. Only after adding the image will the last button become active: Image format. This allows you to adjust the image height and width, convert the image to grayscale, and adjust brightness and contrast.
