Thomas Meunier left Borussia Dortmund last winter to play football for Trabzonspor. He wanted to return to the image of national coach Domenico Tedesco, and he succeeded. But he leaves Turkey after five months.
Meunier signed for Trabzonspor for just six months with a mutual option, but the club wanted to keep him due to his performances. However, the right-back has now announced that he will not sign again and wants to play football closer to home again. He has unilaterally terminated his contract. Something they cannot laugh at at Trabzonspor and the club is considering legal options.
What that means is not yet certain. In the past, he has been linked several times with Club Brugge, who are currently without a right-back due to an injury to Sapp. Kirjany Sapp is the only option, with Maxime De Kuyper – who prefers to play on the left – as an alternative.
There are currently no rumours surrounding Ardenne’s return to Jan Breydel, but it is always possible. Meunier himself has already indicated that he wants to play football for as long as possible.
After all, previous contacts between Meunier and Klopp showed that he was still too expensive for Club Brugge at the time. The gap between offer and demand was still too big.
Meunier is likely to consider all his options and there will still be teams from Europe’s top leagues looking for a right-back. Rennes and Monaco are already linked.
