Alexander Block (ATP 347) received a wildcard from Tennis Australia to participate in the Australian Open qualifiers, the first Grand Slam tournament of the season, in January.

The eighteen-year-old Antwerp native has never played a Grand Slam tournament with the pros before. Earlier that year he took the junior all-around win in Melbourne. “This is an exceptional opportunity,” he said in response to Belga on Tuesday. He added: Winning the junior championship at the beginning of this year is a wonderful memory. The atmosphere in the stadium during the final was amazing. One day I can see myself living in Australia.
Thanks to this rookie moniker, Blockx now receives a wildcard. “It will be an amazing experience. I hope I can get as much out of it as possible.”
In the qualifiers Down Under, Blockx will meet our compatriots David Goffin (ATP 111) and Zizou Bergs (ATP 129). Among the women, Elise Mertens (WTA 29), Grete Minnen (WTA 60) and Yanina Wickmayer (WTA 70) were placed directly at the main table.
