Lost time, excess fuel consumption and additional emissions caused by traffic jams in Belgium will cost more than 5 billion euros in 2023. This represents a 4 percent increase compared to 2022. This is demonstrated by the figures from the Belgian Mobility Dashboard.
October and November were the most expensive months, at €552 million and €513 million respectively. Costs were lowest in July (271 million euros). Passenger cars accounted for 42 percent of costs. Light and heavy trucks represent 23 and 35 percent, respectively.
Figures from the Flemish Traffic Center show that there have never been more traffic jams than in 2023. Peter Bruininks from the Traffic Center said on X (formerly Twitter) that traffic jams were exceptionally severe, especially in November. A record number of traffic jams were also recorded during the months of March, April, May and July.
The Belgian Business Association (VBO) and the sector association VIBIAC calculate the cost of traffic jams every month. The numbers are always published via the Belgian mobility dashboard.
