Maine Secretary of the Interior, Democrat Shanna Bellows, announced the withdrawal last Thursday. Bellows cited the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution as prohibiting officers from holding public office who engage in “insurrection or sedition.” He noted Trump's role in the 2021 attack on the Capitol.
However, according to Trump and his lawyers, Bellows does not have the authority to ban him from the ballot. Also, they believe that many mistakes are made and that it is arbitrary.
It was also decided in Colorado that Trump should not participate in the election. He is expected to appeal there as well. The Federal Supreme Court will ultimately consider the issue. Such a ruling by the high court would clarify for other states the constitutionality of Trump's participation in Republican primaries.
