Tunisian President announces elections and referendum in a speech | abroad

Tunisia will hold a referendum on constitutional reforms on July 25, 2022. Parliamentary elections will be held on December 17 next year. This was announced by President Kais Saied during his address to the nation on Monday.

The amendments to the constitution and amendments to the electoral law follow a series of “general referenda” starting in January 2022.

The president said that parliament will remain idle until a new parliament is elected.

Said dismissed the government at the end of July, suspended parliament and appointed a new prime minister. He abolished the constitution and the rules by decree, but denied the existence of any dictatorial ambitions. However, opponents and civil society view his actions as a coup.
