Ukraine uses long-range US missiles for the first time, possibly in an attack that destroyed nine Russian helicopters

According to the news site POLITICO Ukraine is said to have used long-range ATACMS missiles for the first time in attacking airports. It is said to have been shipped secretly in recent weeks.

Various US media also say – citing two officials who remain anonymous – that the United States secretly supplied Ukraine with long-range missiles, and that they were also used in attacks on airports.

Later in the day, President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Ukraine had used missiles for the first time against Russia. He did not specify where or when.

Ukraine has long requested long-range US missiles that can strike targets far behind the front line, such as logistics supply lines, air bases or railway infrastructure. Some types of ATACMS can hit targets up to 300 kilometers away.

US President Joe Biden refrained from doing so because he feared escalation with Russia. The fact that the missiles have now been delivered and are being used may indicate that the US government has turned a corner now that the Ukrainian counteroffensive remains difficult.
