In an initial response, US Representative Linda Thomas-Greenfield said Russia was “again putting political games above progress”.
Britain's Barbara Woodward noted that she had voted in favor of the resolution to “release the hostages” and “to discourage the ground offensive in Rafah”. He says he is “very disappointed” by Russia and China's veto.
France is also unhappy with the actions of Russia and China. That is why the UN French President Emmanuel Macron has said that a new resolution will be brought to the Security Council.
“After Russia and China's veto a few minutes ago, we will resume work on the basis of the French draft resolution in the Security Council and work with our American, European and Arab partners to reach an agreement.” France has previously indicated that it would draft such a text if the US resolution fails.
The Security Council will vote on the new resolution tomorrow. It called for a ceasefire throughout the month of Ramadan, the release of all hostages and more humanitarian aid. Algeria, Malta, Mozambique, Guyana, Slovenia, Sierra Leone and Switzerland submitted the resolution.
