The number of new applications for unemployment benefits has dropped from 193,000 to 576,000. The number a week ago was adjusted from 25,000 to 769,000.
Economists had previously expected a drop of 710,000 new applications.
The four-week moving average, which is generally low volatility, is 683,000 requests. This is 47,250 less than a week ago.
The number of extended grant applications for the week ended April 3 stood at 3.731 million, an increase of 4,000 applications.
