The US has completely withdrawn from its base in Agadez, Niger, where the ruling military regime has been asking for more than a year to leave the base. This was announced by the US Army on Monday.
“The withdrawal of forces and all US equipment from Agadez Air Base 201 is fully complete,” US Africa Command, AFRICOM, said. The withdrawal of American troops from Niger is a demand of the military regime in power in the country.
In early July, the last US soldiers left the base in Niamey, leaving about 200 units at the critical drone base of Agadez. “Withdrawal from Agadez began in May and coordination between US and Nigerian forces will continue in the coming weeks to ensure the total withdrawal goes ahead as planned,” Africom said, not specifying if there were still soldiers or just equipment.
The U.S. has its base in Niger to fight jihadists who continue to attack the country with extremely bloody attacks. But the military regime, which has been in power for a year, suspended some international cooperation and was asked to leave in March.
