Russia and China have called on the US and UK to halt attacks on Houthi targets in Yemen. At a UN Security Council meeting, Russian and Chinese ambassadors said the attacks were illegal. And, according to countries, they disrupt international shipping.
For a month, UK and US forces have been carrying out regular airstrikes on Houthi targets in Yemen. The attacks came in response to Houthi attacks on Western ships in the Red Sea. The strait is very important for international shipping, especially for container ships.
Ambassadors from both countries last night called the strikes “proportionate and lawful” and said the Houthis, not them, were disrupting shipping. At the same Security Council meeting, the ambassador-in-charge, Sweden's Hans Grundberg, pledged to resolve the conflict in the Red Sea.
Western countries have supported attacks on the Houthis, and the Dutch military has been involved in at least two attacks. Criticism has so far come from countries in the region such as Iran and Iraq.
