The United States reopened four border crossings with Mexico on Thursday as high levels of illegal immigration eased and workers were released. A senior US official said.
It concerns border crossings in Texas, Arizona and California. In December, U.S. Border Patrol agents struggled to handle the flow of illegal immigrants, sometimes closing up nearly 11,000 people a day. Last week the figure was just 6,400 illegal immigrants a day – a sharp drop from pre-Christmas levels.
Mexican and U.S. officials last week pledged to work more closely to deal with migration recorded along their shared border, as top U.S. officials traveled to Mexico to meet with Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. As a result, border control in Mexico has been tightened.
In the US Congress, lawmakers, mainly Republicans, continue to push for tougher security measures at the border. They have linked the introduction of such measures to the acceptance of foreign aid. In other words: Ukraine has no weapons unless border security is tightened.
