Victory Day in the formation of the Dutch government has not yet resulted in a breakthrough: “Reforming the current government is a serious option” | Abroad

In the Netherlands, there has been no breakthrough yet in the difficult negotiations to form a new government. Tomorrow we will talk more. Detective Johan Remix invited nine parties, including the small conservative Reform Party (SGP). The Christian Democratic CDA, the left-wing liberal D66 and the right-wing liberal VVD held internal consultations after a breakthrough appeared on the horizon, but there was no white smoke yet.

According to insiders, Remkes sees restarting the current resigned government – with VVD, D66, CDA and ChristenUnie – as a serious possibility. So he presented this option to the leaders of the nine parties in one-on-one talks. Remix also asked the parties to give their opinion on, among other things, a Cabinet outside Parliament. According to this theory, VVD, D66 and CDA can form the basis, for example, with ministers from PvdA and GroenLinks. In that case, they would not be bound by a coalition agreement.

However, PvdA and GroenLinks are not wild about this scenario. “We want a majority government with broad support,” he said.

The chance of a new election is very slim. The remix aims for “substantive discussions”, so that formation – more than six months after the elections – can finally begin.

“Don’t be childish”

Remarkably, Remkes sees restarting the current government as a serious option. On Monday, Remix said he did not want to repeat the work of his predecessor Mariette Hammer. Then it also investigated, among other things, the possibility of continuing with Rutte-3.

It was the leader of the D66 Kaag who prevented this restart for so long. She felt like things had to change and she didn’t want to rule with ChristenUnie and CDA again. Last Sunday, I gave up on that request. At the time, she was still setting the condition she wanted first to talk about a new six-party cabinet: VVD, D66, CDA, PvdA, GroenLinks and ChristenUnie. “But if you start with six, all variations are of course possible. We’ve raised the bar. Then you don’t have to be childish about a less desirable outcome.”

chaotic start

Remix reportedly wanted to “draw conclusions” on the formation of the government today. “But maybe it will take an extra day or two if he really finds that makes a difference,” a source said. This is what happened.

The start of D-Day was chaotic, as politicians sought the entrance and tourists asked for a selfie with the film’s protagonists. Many party leaders entered without speaking to the press, and others did not know why they were actually invited.
