Once again, Christian Benteke has made his calling card in MLS. The Belgian striker scored his second hat-trick this season against Atlanta, helping his team win 2-3.
On a visit to Atlanta, D.C. United were 1-0 up after just over fifteen minutes following a stunning penalty kick from Thiago Almada. The response was not long in coming: Jared Stroud’s pass from his right wing found Christian Benteke in the penalty area, where the Belgian headed home the equaliser.
The scoreline for the visitors 1-2 was also of the same type: Stroud’s assist, Benteke’s goal, again with a header.
Shortly after half-time, the home side were at it again after a Beltola own goal, but it was Benteke who had the last word. In the 55th minute, he headed a corner kick from KliΔ: the final score was 2-3.
For the 45-time Red Devil, it was his second hat-trick of the MLS season. The 33-year-old striker is now MLS’s top scorer with 11 goals, alongside Luis Suarez and Cristian Arango. Lionel Messi has 10 goals.
