Vuelta 2024: Heatstroke and headaches lead to Antonio Tiberi’s retirement from the white jersey

to update Antonio Tiberi has been forced to leave the Vuelta a España. The Bahrain Victorious leader still wore the youth white jersey during the ninth stage to Granada, but did not appear at the finish. His team reported that Tiberi suffered heat stroke, a headache and a high body temperature during the stage.

The last image we saw of Tiberi was about 60 kilometres from the finish, when he lost contact with the favourites on the first ascent of the Alto de Hazalanas. The Italian started the mountain stage in fourth place in the general classification, 5.00 minutes behind red jersey holder Ben O’Connor.

After being released from the group with O’Connor and Primož Roglič, Tiberi was out of the picture. In the end we had to wait for his arrival to see how much time he would lose in the general classification, but Tiberi did not make it to the finish line in Granada.

About two hours into the ride, Bahrain Victorious shared news about the Italian classification rider: “Antonio felt unwell during the ninth stage, suffering from heat stroke, light-headedness and high body temperature. Cooling him down stabilised his condition and he is now in good shape, but unfortunately he had to give up. We wish you a speedy recovery!”

Earlier in the opening week, the team also lost Damiano Caruso to illness. Today, Team Bahrain Victorious lost Rainer Keplinger in addition to Tiberi.
