The United States has urged China to end its “dangerous” actions in the South China Sea. This call comes after a collision between a Filipino boat and a Chinese Coast Guard vessel near a disputed coral reef area.
“These actions reflect not only a reckless disregard for the safety of Filipinos, but also international law,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said. He called on China to “refrain from destabilizing behavior.”
She added, “The United States stands with its Filipino allies.” He referred to the mutual defense treaty between the two countries.
“Filipino ship rammed”
China and the Philippines exchange accusations over an incident that occurred in the South China Sea. According to the Philippine government, Chinese Coast Guard vessels used water cannons and also rammed a Filipino ship yesterday. China, in turn, accused a Filipino ship of “deliberately” colliding with a Chinese Coast Guard ship.
The Philippine ships were heading to a disputed coral area in the Spratly Islands, 195 kilometers from the Philippine province of Palawan. The reef, known locally as “Ayungin Shoal”, lies within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone.
