Wear OS has been in winter for years. Winter appears to be over after the I / O conference, which is also evident from the updates that Wear OS developers bring to the platform. For example, it became known during Google I / O that Spotify would provide the ability to store music locally.
Spotify update to Wear OS
Wear OS has been seen as a concern of Google for years, sparking an aversion to the platform among Wear OS developers. Wear OS was packed with functionality, but in addition to these features, the platform also had a lot of bugs and fewer and fewer Wear watches were sold. Google’s partnership with Samsung to fix Wear system is now changing developers’ minds. For example, during the Google I / O conference, it became known that apps like Strava would be revamped in whole or in part.

Spotify will not completely overhaul its app, as revealed during the I / O opening speech, but it will add important mobile and desktop app functionality to the Wear OS app. This includes downloading music to Wear OS devices’ internal storage. Currently, when listening to music via Spotify on Wear OS, you should always have an internet connection. If you lose this connection, you will not be able to continue listening to the music.
Spotify shows in presentation I / O slides that the update makes it possible to download entire playlists. It is not currently known if Spotify also allows you to download singles. It also remains unknown to what extent it will be possible to predetermine the quality of the files to be downloaded. This is already possible in Spotify on Android devices and computers.
Wear OS in a “catch-up race”
It’s surprising that Spotify only added download functionality after partnering with Samsung, since Tizen’s Spotify app already offers the ability to store music locally. Meanwhile, Spotify doesn’t seem to have specifically blocked the feature from Wear. An update that should provide functionality for WatchOS, Apple’s smartwatch operating system, is rolling out during Spotify Wear OS updates.
Meanwhile, Google is introducing the YouTube Music app for Wear OS. According to Google, this app will have a function to store music locally, just like Spotify. Both apps are not currently available. The YouTube Music app won’t launch until later this year, along with a major update to Wear OS. The company has not announced exactly when this will happen during I / O 2021.
Spotify says an update to downloading music to Wear OS will be rolling out soon. The feature is currently under development so it may take some time to download music to Wear OS.
