The issue surrounding Adrian Newey is beginning to take on larger dimensions. It was announced earlier this week that the senior designer would be leaving Red Bull Racing, and several teams are eyeing his services. Williams are also interested in Newey.
Newey played an important role in Red Bull Racing’s successes. He was behind all of Red Bull’s title-winning cars, so his departure is certainly a major setback for the Austrian racing team. So it is not surprising that many teams are interested in signing him. The Italian press are convinced he is close to a deal with Ferrari, while Aston Martin also appear to be interested.
Ahead of the first free practice in Miami, Williams boss James Fowles indicated his team was also in discussions with Newey. The designer had already worked for Williams in the 1990s, and Vowles indicated to Motorsport.com that he wanted to continue this period of success: “The discussions are still at an early stage. But are we in discussions? Yes.” Fowles says it won’t stop at just one conversation: “I’ve known Adrian for a while and spoke to him on Friday. I’m sure I’ll have another conversation with him soon. He’s an icon of the sport.” “There’s no doubt about that.”
