Winter weather takes its toll: 59 deaths from snow and frost in US | Weather news

Since mid-January, large parts of the United States have been affected by cold weather. Due to strong winds, the temperature drops to -40 degrees Celsius at certain places.

Several storms in recent days have brought freezing temperatures, snow and many accidents on the roads. Millions of Americans have been warned again about severe weather in the coming days.

At least 17 people have died in Tennessee, according to local media. This includes a man buried under a blanket of snow that fell from the roof of his house. In eastern Pennsylvania, five women died in highway crashes, and in Kentucky, five died due to winter weather, the governor said. Deaths also occurred in Oregon, Illinois, Kansas, New Hampshire, New York, Wisconsin and Washington states.

In Oregon, three people were electrocuted after a power line fell on a car during Wednesday's snowstorm, according to the Portland Fire Department. In Oregon, 75,000 people were without power Friday evening and the governor declared a state of emergency.

According to the website Flightaware.com, 1,100 US flights have been canceled and 8,000 have been delayed due to the weather. A cold wave will continue into the weekend in certain areas such as the center of the country.
