Facebook’s privacy settings menu is now starting to look like a maze. If you’re looking for a specific setting, you’ll always get lost in a list of other settings you don’t need at the time. We’ve looked the way to the seven Facebook privacy settings you should definitely tweak, and explain why it’s important to tweak them.
Facebook privacy settings
Everywhere Facebook In recent years there has been an increasing focus on aggregate. On the one hand the privacy of your Facebook data behind the scenes and on the other hand the profile data that all users can view on your profile. So users can control their privacy on social media with more and more settings. The disadvantage of these settings is that you have to enable them yourself. As a result, there is a good chance that a lot of your data – such as your friends list – will be visible to everyone.
In this article we focus on data that others can view. This relates to data on your timeline or public profile information, which you may not want other users of the Platform to be able to find. We explain the steps below for the Android app. The same settings can be found in the iOS app and Facebook website. However, sometimes the settings are displayed a little differently or can be found in a different place. So keep that in mind when following the step-by-step plans.
1. Hide your friends list
By default, your friends list is displayed publicly and anyone can browse the list of friends, family or colleagues. So it’s possible for friends of friends, or people you don’t know at all, to see who you know and who you have a relationship with, for example. Aren’t you comfortable that others can access this list? Then Facebook has a setting so it makes the list available only to friends, to specific friends, or even just to you.
- open the Facebook app
- Click on the top right hamburger menu
- Click below Settings and privacy
- Then choose tab Settings
- Scroll down to do so Privacy Encounters
- then press Privacy
- Look for the option Who can see your friends list?
- Click Setup and select File Desired option
2. Check out the tagged timeline posts
You may have seen it, Ray-Ban sunglasses are a deception. A hacked Facebook account allowed attackers to tag a large group of people to spread Ray-Ban messages around the world. This was possible and was possible due to the lack of verification of messages – texts and images – in which people are flagged. There is usually nothing to worry about when friends tag each other, but that can have serious consequences. Additionally, you may also want to be able to determine if the post is on your timeline. This can be done through the steps below.
- open the Facebook app
- Click on the top right hamburger menu
- Click below Settings and privacy
- Then choose tab Settings
- Scroll down to do so Privacy Encounters
- Click below Privacy On Profile and tagging
- Select the option below Want to check messages you are tagged in before the message appears on your profile?
- put the Transformation in next to Check tagged posts
3. Remove yourself from search engines
Facebook allows profile pages to be indexed by search engines like Google by default. This way, anyone can find your profile by searching for your name in the search engine. Would you rather not find your profile on Google – or any other search engine? Then you can disable indexing of your Facebook profile via your Facebook settings. Keep in mind that this does not happen on day one and depends on how quickly search engines remove your profile. So if your profile can still be found after a couple of days, now you know why.
- open the Facebook app
- Click on the top right hamburger menu
- Click below Settings and privacy
- Then choose tab Settings
- Scroll down to do so Privacy Encounters
- then press Privacy
- Scroll down to do so Do you want search engines outside of Facebook to redirect to your profile? Come across, then click on it
- Finally put a file Transformation back Allow search engines outside of Facebook to redirect to your profile
4. Limit search options on Facebook
How would you like others to find your Facebook profile? In any case, it will not be possible via search engines, but it will still be possible to search for your Facebook profile using your phone number or email address. Unless you disable this in the platform’s privacy settings, of course. If you disable these options, only you can be found by your name. If that’s exactly what you want, it’s time to get started.
- open the Facebook app
- Click on the top right hamburger menu
- Click below Settings and privacy
- Then choose tab Settings
- Scroll down to do so Privacy Encounters
- then press Privacy
- Scroll down to do so Who can you find using the email address or phone number you provided? Come across, click it
- Choose Both Desired option settings, with a choice: everybodyAnd friends of friendsAnd friends From just me
5. Check the connected services
Have you ever completed the “Know if I’m a Mermaid” survey that is circulating on Facebook? There is a good chance that the service is connected to your Facebook profile which can display data from your account. Such applications can no longer “empty your entire Facebook account”, as was possible in the time of Cambridge Analytica, but parties can still view the data. This is of course not a problem for the services that you actively use and trust. If the service you are no longer using is still connected, it is best to remove it. Read below how you can do this.
- open the Facebook app
- Click on the top right hamburger menu
- Click below Settings and privacy
- Then choose tab Settings
- Scroll down to do so protection Encounters
- Then click the tab Apps and Websites
- Choose the option above Log in with Facebook
- in case Locations From apps Connected, you can disable it here
6. Hide previous messages
Would you rather your old Facebook messages not be available to everyone, for example because you are less proud of the texts or photos you posted in the past? Facebook offers a setting for that. However, messages remain visible to friends when the feature is turned on. The tool can only be used to make messages invisible to strangers (public) or friends of friends. The advantage is that this way you don’t have to manually delete old messages or at least make them invisible.
- open the Facebook app
- Click on the top right hamburger menu
- Click below Settings and privacy
- Then choose tab Settings
- Scroll down to do so Privacy Encounters
- then press Privacy
- Look for the option Restrict who can see previous posts, click on it
- then press Restrict previous posts to perform work
7. Disable face recognition for photos
Facebook has gotten smarter in recent years. For example, the service can now recognize faces in photos and make suggestions for tagging specific people when posting photos. In addition, Facebook can send you a notification if your face is found on another profile, but without the other person tagging you in it. It might just be someone else using your photo to mislead others.
However, the extent to which Facebook uses facial recognition raises a number of privacy issues. For example, you can ask if you really want Facebook to know what your face looks like. Facial features are, after all, biometric data that you carry with you throughout your life, without ever having the opportunity to modify it. Given the future where more and more biometric data is being used, it might be a good idea to adjust the setting right away. You can learn how to do it using a step-by-step plan below.
- open the Facebook app
- Click on the top right hamburger menu
- Click below Settings and privacy
- Then choose tab Settings
- Scroll down to do so Privacy Encounters
- then press Face recognition
- Select option Do you want Facebook to recognize you in photos and videos?
- Click the new To disable facial recognition
