Then no one will pay.
In my experience, YouTube at 720p on my phone looks almost as good as the above resolution, while on my computer (on a 27-inch 1440p monitor) I can only see the difference between 720p, 1080p, and 1440p. (And before anyone says I am) Pixel Peep, with higher resolution, increased overall image quality and bandwidth also on YouTube)
Most people watch YouTube on their phones, so why pay when 720p is free and sufficient for most people?
Google has to come up with something, at least offer the YT Lite sub again because it’s no longer available in the Netherlands (and not everyone wants to pay the current amount monthly, and not everyone wants YT music, because some people prefer Spotify, Apple Music etc)
The second thing is that playing with resolution isn’t the answer, 720p, as I just said, is enough for many people, so there’s no incentive to pay, and 480p is again too little (and locked at 30fps, 60fps from 720 Pixel) so people are using ad blockers again.
So what is the solution? I have no idea, so it’s easier to think about what won’t work than what will work.
But it won’t be limited to just one thing, Google will have to think of multiple solutions.
Anyway, the number of ads you see now is not a solution, over the years I have seen more and more people in my offline and online circle using ad blocker specifically because of YouTube, because in the past the number of ads was not so bad and most people on Although they weren’t bothered by it (because you see more commercials on regular TV), YouTube has become increasingly aggressive.
Happened to me yesterday (we have 2 Chromecast devices at home, one is the new Android TV, one is the regular 2g), the video was 12 minutes long and I had 2 commercials in the beginning that you can’t skip, 1 in the middle over 5 minutes that you can skip And at the end it is 3 minutes shorter, you can skip the last one.
Money has to be made, and given the type of service, it costs a lot of money to keep it running.
But resolution limitations, not offering Lite subscription everywhere, trolling Adblock users etc won’t help, Google should just seriously consider multiple solutions to implement at the same time, make sure YouTube stays free, and offer enough premium services to those who pay and find the balance So they don’t push people towards an ad blocker.
Because there will always be people who won’t care about this and just use an ad blocker, but if I look at my environment, I can count on one hand, myself included, how many people actually started using an ad blocker 10 years ago (and more because of ads On the Internet itself, more than on YouTube)
But now everyone in my offline and online environment uses an ad blocker, and for many YouTubers the motivation to do so was not even the online ads themselves.
